When I first prototyped Mission of Mercy, I tucked a small temple ruin away in the cave system for players to discover. I always thought it would be incredible if that ruin led to a much larger underground temple, or even a hidden lost city. This was far too ambitious for the original project, but for the remake, I was determined to fulfill that desire.
To begin, I focused on developing a modular kit that would allow me to construct any ancient Khmer temple. My research involved months of studying Cambodian temples, from the iconic Angkor Wat to numerous smaller, less-known sites. The result is this kit, which contains all the essential components needed to create a wide variety of the temples I researched. I'm already looking forward to expanding it further with additional statues and intricate carvings.
During my research, I made a fascinating discovery: there's compelling evidence that some of these ancient temples might actually predate the Khmer civilization. This insight has inspired me to delve deeper into the mysteries these structures could hold. My future plans include adding hidden passages and traps to the kit, enabling me to design a Tomb Raider / Uncharted-style adventure map that explores the untold secrets of these ancient ruins.
